The Japanese yen found some relief on Tuesday, strengthening to 154.40 per dollar after a recent slide, as the U.S. dollar pulled back from its one-year high amid profit-taking. The yen rose 0.2% in early trading, recovering from losses following Bank of Japan (BOJ) Governor Kazuo Ueda’s speech, which offered no new insights on a potential rate hike in December. 

The Mexican peso dropped sharply against the U.S. dollar as results from the U.S. presidential election began to emerge, deepening the volatility that has recently impacted the currency. On Tuesday evening, the peso fell to as low as 20.5260 per dollar, down over 2% from its previous close and hitting its lowest level since September 2022. 

Asian stocks surged on Monday, led by Japan’s Nikkei, while the U.S. dollar hit a new seven-week high against the yen. This rally followed unexpectedly strong U.S. labor data, which alleviated fears of a recession and led to a sharp reduction in expectations for significant rate cuts by the Federal Reserve.

The U.S. dollar strengthened against major currencies on Tuesday after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell pushed back against expectations of more significant interest rate cuts.

The dollar fell against the yen on Friday, while gold reached a record high as expectations for a substantial Federal Reserve rate cut increased.  

The U.S. dollar declined against several major currencies on Tuesday as markets prepared for key inflation data and a much-anticipated U.S. presidential debate. Despite these events, analysts believe neither outcome is likely to significantly alter the current direction of monetary policy. 

The U.S. dollar continued to hover near its lowest levels in over a year against the euro and sterling on Thursday, driven by a dovish stance from the Federal Reserve and emerging signs of weakness in the U.S. job market, both of which are reinforcing the case for potential interest rate cuts.  

Japan is poised to redirect a significant portion of its substantial dollar reserves back into yen, a move that could significantly impact global financial markets due to the scale of the assets involved. 

Recently, the term “petrodollar” has frequently surfaced in economic discussions and news headlines, sparking considerable controversy over its outlook. This surge in interest comes amidst emerging rumors that suggests Saudi Arabia may end its 50-year Petrodollar agreement with the U.S. to price oil exclusively in U.S. dollars. 
Currently, there are sources left and right claiming that this deal is fake news or true news. The main argument is on an agreement between Saudi and U.S. signed in June of 1974.
